John E. Finnerty
John E. Finnerty, a Certified Matrimonial Attorney, is the chairman of Finnerty, Canda & Concannon, P.C. He has been recognized by his peers through Best Lawyers in America® as “Lawyer of the Year” for family law in Hackensack for 2017 and in Newark for 2013.
A highly respected Certified Matrimonial Law Attorney, Finnerty has tried and litigated many precedent-setting NJ cases, including Lepis v. Lepis, Nehra v. Uhlar and Davis v. Davis. In 1998 he was awarded the Saul Tischler award by the New Jersey State Bar Association, which recognized a lifetime of contributions to the advancement of family law in New Jersey. Mr. Finnerty was one of the principal drafters of the revisions to the New Jersey alimony statute that were adopted effective September 14, 2014. He was one of a core group of the Matrimonial Lawyers Alliance that conceptualized changes in the law regarding modification of alimony in connection with retirement, lifestyle, cohabitation and other change of circumstances applications.
He also has served as Chairman of the NJSBA Family Law Section for the 1993-94 term. He was a member of the New Jersey Supreme Court Family Part Practice Committee for eleven, two year terms and was Chair of that Committee’s Subcommittee on Custody and Parenting from 2002 through 2008. He is a Senior Editor of the Family Lawyer, a publication of the Family Law Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association, and frequently writes and lectures about cutting edge issues pertaining to family law.
Mr. Finnerty received his J.D. from Rutgers University School of Law, Newark in 1972 and his M.A. in Political Science from Brown University in 1968. He received his B.A. in Political Science from Brown University in 1965.
Mr. Finnerty is a member of the New Jersey State and American Bar Associations. He is also a member of the Association of Trial Lawyers and the Bergen County and Essex County Bar Associations. Mr. Finnerty was recognized as one of the Top Lawyers in Bergen County in the area of Matrimonial & Family Law in 2017 by 201 Magazine.
